Since Yelp and Facebook are the U.S.’s most trusted customer review sites, be sure you have a profile there. Yelp tends to be for in-person businesses, while Facebook can be for anything. If your business is already listed on these websites, you’ll need to claim it, first.
Also, consider your Google My Business presence. This business rating will likely show up any time someone Google’s your business name. Finally, you can claim your website on the Better Business Bureau if you’re in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico.
And don’t forget to look up industry-specific websites. For example, TripAdvisor is popular for the hospitality industry, and OpenTable is big in the restaurant industry. Make sure to maintain your profiles on these websites and keep your information on them up to date.
Remember to Ask!
Getting more reviews is usually as easy as asking for them. But how do you ask?
If you’re an online business, it’s so easy to set up an online review process. You’ll already have the customer’s email, so you can easily contact them with a link to your review site of choice.
Usually, it’s best to wait until 3-5 days after a product is delivered or a service has been completed. This gives the customer plenty of time to come up with their own opinion about your business.
If you’re a brick-and-mortar business, it can be harder to get customers’ email addresses. Advertise an email listing for your business that will offer exclusive discounts to your customers. You can then use these email blasts as reminders to leave reviews for your business.
To Incentivize or Not to Incentivize…
We’re sure you’ve gone out and seen restaurants that offer a free appetizer for a Yelp review. This practice is called “incentivizing”. While it seems like a no-brainer, it’s actually more complicated than you might think.
Many of the 3rd party sites where your reviews will be posted are very strict about how you can ask for reviews. If it’s discovered you’re using incentives to get reviews, they might delete your profile and possibly fine you. That means all your reviews, both incentivized and organic, are gone.
If you want to use incentives, consider sending out an email with a discount code or coupon. This is incentivizing sales, not reviews, and is completely legitimate. After you get more customers, send an email to your new, larger customer base asking for reviews.
